James Harold Hedding (1888 - 1979)


JAMES HAROLD HEDDING was born on 10 June 1888, in Umtata, Cape Colony, South Africa, to Ernulphus Theodore Hedding and Sarah Elizabeth Ann Hedding [Kidd]. In February 1915, aged 26 years, he was an Engineering Electrician in Golden Kopi, Rhodesia. James died on 16 May 1979, aged 90 years.

He served in the military Service No. 1492 2/6 CYC Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment on 23 Feb 1915 in Brighton, Sussex, England. Appointed to Lance Corporal (Acting) on 3rd March 1915. He was discharged  to join the Expeditionary Force on 25 Jun 1915.

He attested in the military Regiment Number: 119016 Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) on 25 Jun 1915.


He was a member of Royal Aero Club on 11 May 1917 in Edgware, Middlesex, England. 



James signed a Will on 5 Oct 1937 in Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa.


James Harold Hedding died on 16 May 1979 in South Africa when he was 90 years old.

HEDDING, JAMES LAWRENCE, 2nd Lieut., 3rd (Reserve) Battn. (Dorsetshire Militia), Thc Dorsetshire Regt., 2nd s. of William Hedding, of Chalumna, Dunbar Road, Bournemouth, by his wife, Bertha Elizabeth, dau. of Thomas Hawlett Warren ;  b. East London, South Africa, 26 June, 1898 ;  educ. Selbourne College, East London, South Africa, and afterwards by a tutor in Cambridge, where he was when the European War broke out ;  volunteered and enlisted in the 7th (Service) Battn. The Hampshire Regt. 14 Sept. 1914, and after going through a course of training, was given a commission as 2nd Lieut. in the 3rd Dorsetshire Regt. 14 April, 1915 ;  served with the Expeditionary Force in France from 1 Oct. following, when he was attached to the 1st Battn. The Middlesex Regt., and died in hospital at Bethune 28 March, 1916, from wounds received in action in the trenches near Cuinchy the same day from a rifle grenade ;  unm.
